dwell Installation
Artist Statement

dwell Installation is a visual meditation to resonate the peace and tranquility of the natural environment. This nest colony is inspired by great blue heron rookeries, where birds live in communities. Suspended and released from their usual constraints in nature these nests are positioned to allow movement into and among the installation space creating an opening for contemplation and observation.
The creative process used to construct these sculptural nests was a laborious intensive experience of hand whittling and hand sawing of discarded scrap wood. This ritual penance was a physical cleansing of violent energy transformed into three- dimensional forms. The repetitious act of cutting creates the dwelling. Art as action - a visceral body experience.
The paradoxical cycles of birth and death are symbolized by bones, dried fruit skins, and botanicals. When organic matter dwells long enough it decays, completing the cycle all living things must endure - the process of returning home to nature. |
